New
Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Presents Credentials / United
Nations
Office at Vienna
VIENNA, 26 July
(UN Information Service) - The new
Permanent Representative of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri
Lanka,
Aliyar Lebbe Abdul Azeez, presented his credentials today to the
Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) Yury
Fedotov.
Mr. Azeez is also
Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of Austria.
He has served in various
capacities in the Ministry of External Affairs among them: Director
General for
Middle East; Deputy Director General, UN and Multilateral Affairs;
Ambassador
and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations
in New
York; and Minister Counsellor and Head of Chancery, Sri Lanka High
Commission,
Canberra, Australia. He held other posts including: Deputy Director of
the
Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) in the Prime
Minister's
Office and Advisor to the Sub-Committee on Immediate Humanitarian and
Rehabilitation Needs in the North and East (SIHRN) in Colombo; Director
for
Treaty Environment and Law at the Secretariat of the South Asian
Association
for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Deputy Director Division for South
Asia
and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
Mr. Azeez holds a Bachelors
of Law from the
University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, a Certificate of Diplomatic Studies
from the
Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva,
Switzerland, and a
Masters
of Law from Tribhuvan
University, Nepal.
He is
married with two children.
