Parliament Convenes
The Inaugural Session of the
14th Parliament began on 22 April 2010 and Former Minister of Ports
and Aviation, Chamal Rajapaksa was unanimously elected as
the Speaker at the inaugural
session. Priyankara Jayaratne was elected as the Deputy
Speaker who held this post
in the previous parliament as well. The 225
newly elected Members of Parliament were sworn in before the Speaker.
In the new Parliament, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA)
obtained 127
District basis seats along with 17 National basis seats, a total of 144
seats
out of 225 seats in the Parliament. It has obtained a total of
4,846,386 votes
(60.33 %) island wide.
Meanwhile, the new Cabinet of
Ministers was sworn in at the
Presidential Secretariat on 23 April 2010. The newly sworn in Cabinet
of Ministers includes Hon. D. M. Jayaratne, Prime Minister and Minister
of Buddhasasana and Religious
Affairs and Hon. Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External
Affairs.
